Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods related to modern-day nautiluses, squid and octopuses. They lived in Earth's oceans for hundreds of millions of years before disappearing around 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period. Their distinctive chambered shells formed beautiful spirals as the animals grew.

The original ammonite shell was primarily composed of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate. During fossilisation, this material can be altered or replaced by other minerals, meaning the composition of individual fossils can vary.

The spiral of the Ammonite is its greatest story. It speaks of cycles, evolution and the wisdom gained through experience. It reminds us that we don't move through life in a straight line — sometimes we circle back, revisit old lessons and discover that we are now able to see them with completely new eyes.
